Ruaa Centre for Strategic Studies, Consulting, and Training organised an awareness lecture at the Faculty of Education at University of Aden entitled: “How to Protect Sea Turtles in the Gulf of Aden from the Risk of Extinction.” The event was held as part of the “Save Sea Turtles in the Gulf of Aden” project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Small Grants Programme (SGP), with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and preserving biodiversity.
Dr Jaklin Mansour Al-Batani, President of the Centre, emphasised that the event forms part of efforts to address pressing environmental issues, stressing that protecting sea turtles is a shared responsibility that requires raising public awareness—particularly in light of challenges such as pollution and overfishing.
For his part, the Vice President of the University of Aden for Academic Affairs, Dr Mohammed Qashash, highlighted the importance of linking academia with societal issues, affirming the university’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness and strengthening the role of students in environmental protection.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Education in Aden, Dr Fahmi Hassan Ahmed Yusuf, expressed his welcome for the event, noting the faculty’s commitment to supporting awareness activities, enhancing students’ environmental understanding, and integrating such issues into the educational process.
The lecture, delivered by Dr Abdullah Al-Hindi, Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Aden, reviewed the key threats facing sea turtles and ways to mitigate them, in the presence of academic staff and students. The Ru’aa Centre also carried out a field awareness activity, which included posting informational posters and distributing brochures to promote marine conservation.
On the sidelines of the lecture, the Centre implemented an additional field awareness activity with the participation of students from the Faculty of Education. This included placing guidance posters within the faculty and distributing awareness brochures, with the aim of strengthening understanding of the importance of protecting sea turtles, highlighting the threats they face, and clarifying the role of the community in reducing these risks.
