My Identity Team Inspects Religious Landmarks in Altawhi

During the visit, the team learned about the history of the churches, including Ras Morbat Church, built in 1863 AD. It is considered one of the oldest churches built during the British colonial period and has become one of the landmarks signifying the religious civilizational heritage of the capital, Aden, which was a symbol of coexistence among different religions.

The team also reviewed the condition of the Catholic Christ Church in Bungusar, which was looted and destroyed by the Houthis in 2015 AD, followed by extremists who looted and destroyed the church, vandalizing its artifacts and historical/religious heritage. The team documented this vandalism.

The team was informed that the destruction is still ongoing despite the church being closed for more than 8 years. Thieves continue to tamper with the remaining heritage amidst the disregard of the Governor, the Director of Crater, and the security agencies regarding this matter.

The My Identity team sent a message to the Governor of Aden urging him to fulfill his duty in protecting the cultural and historical heritage of the city of Aden and to salvage what can be saved. The vandalism of Aden's landmarks has escalated, and no deterrent measures have been taken to stop the aggressors since he assumed power.
