Green Bridges Initiative Continues on Its Second Day, Promoting Participatory Governance and Protected Area Conservation

As part of the “Green Bridges” Initiative, organized by the Ruaa Centre for Strategic Studies, Consulting and Training, under the “Peace Infrastructure” Project implemented by the Political Development Forum in partnership with the Berghof Foundation and funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the training course continued today, Monday, in Aden.

The initiative aims to strengthen local capacities in environmental conflict management, participatory governance, and the protection of natural reserves.

The second day brought together 30 participants, including representatives of the local authority in Al-Buraiqeh District, community committees, the General Authority for Environmental Protection, coastal women’s associations, and environmental activists. The sessions focused on the concepts of environmental governance and participatory management of protected areas, highlighting the importance of involving diverse stakeholders in decision-making related to environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources.

The training addressed the concept of environmental governance and its key principles, including transparency, accountability, the rule of law, justice and equity, efficiency, responsiveness, and participation. Particular emphasis was placed on access to information, clarity of roles and responsibilities, fair enforcement of legislation, and ensuring the participation of different stakeholders in natural resource management.

Participants also discussed participatory management of protected areas as an approach based on cooperation among government institutions, local authorities, local communities, fishers, civil society organizations, universities, researchers, and the private sector. Such cooperation strengthens shared responsibility for the protection of protected areas and the sustainable management of their resources.

The sessions further explored the requirements for effective participatory governance in Al-Azizi Island, Ras Amran, and Khor Bir Ahmed Protected Areas, including developing a shared vision, strengthening communication and information-sharing channels, clarifying roles and responsibilities, establishing clear mechanisms for conflict management, and ensuring meaningful community participation, monitoring, and continuous evaluation.

The discussions emphasized that local communities are essential partners in the protection and management of natural resources. Drawing on local knowledge and involving communities in decision-making can strengthen shared responsibility for protected areas and coastal and marine ecosystems.

The second day featured extensive interaction and discussions among participants on the current state of environmental governance, the challenges facing the management of natural protected areas, and ways to strengthen coordination and partnerships among government institutions, local communities, and environmental stakeholders.

The Green Bridges Initiative forms part of Ruaa Centre’s efforts to enhance environmental awareness and capacities, create broader spaces for community participation, and support the role of women, youth, and environmental advocates in protecting natural resources and contributing to practical and sustainable solutions to environmental conflicts and challenges.

The initiative’s activities are scheduled to continue with dialogue and practical sessions focusing on mechanisms for applying governance principles and managing environmental conflicts, contributing to the development of more effective local partnerships for the protection of protected areas and natural resources.
